This photo shows the unique Hofskirkja, one of the few remaining turf churches in Iceland. The mounds in the floor are graves of the deceased which lived in the area. A humbling, magical and unforgettable place.
This is one of my favorite spots in Iceland, and I tried to capture it with proper light for the last five years, with no success. Fortunately Nature decided to help this year!
We had driven 350km on the previous night, straight from Landmannalaugar to Skaftafell, as this was the only area in the south that would be spared by the THIRD storm of the 2018 trip. Unfortunately the forecast failed (once again) so that did not happen, with the whole morning and part of the afternoon filled with strong winds and constant rain. As soon as the weather calmed down a bit we decided to go to the nearest service station.
I was setting up my gear to do photo backups, when all of a sudden the sky started to clear in the south, with clouds moving at the most incredible speed. I hadn´t gone to the bathroom yet and the urge was really calling, but you know, there are priorities in life, so we quickly decided to leave and drive to the closest spot in the area, as the light started to look promising! ?Fortunately that spot was the gorgeous Hofskirkja, and after five years I was finally able to shoot it with stunning light. I cannot the remember the last time that I saw such intense yellow warmth in the sky, with the dense clouds at the right receiving the warm light of the uncovered sun on the left. This is not Photoshop light, this is God’s Photoshop light, and on my page you can find a video I made during the trip, showing straight from the camera photos from this session.
